The Hungarian Motorsport Federation (MAMS) Speedway discipline uploaded Hungary’s 2020 racing calendar. The event schedule includes 8 meetings in 2 cities overall.
The Grand Prix of Debrecen is the second biggest traditional invitational event after Pardubice’s Golden Helmet. The event holds always on the 20th of August, Hungary’s State Foundation Day. During this week the city of Debrecen organizes flower festivals, while the highlight is the traditional Flower Carnival on the morning of the 20th of August. The carnival one of the most beautiful and unique events in the country.
What about other venues?
Well, back in the days Hungary used to have speedway events in Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Morahalom, etc but sadly these tracks earlier – later disappeared from the speedway map. The famous thermal bath city, Gyula also used to organize meetings, the last race was held in 2017. Nowadays the track in Gyula doesn’t have a licence, that’s why they can’t organize any meetings.
What about the new track in Vasad?
As I know the only one track which is nearby the capital, Budapest (~ 20km from Budapest Airport) is still under construction although Vasad appeared in last year’s Hungarian speedway calendar. The venue didn’t host any meeting so probably it’s still not ready to get a license and organize events under FIM regulations.

After the Hungarian golden speedway era (the 80s-90s) the sport became weaker and smaller. Tracks, clubs, riders, sponsors disappeared and the government stopped to support the sport which caused that the Hungarian speedway is still suffering. Fortunately, this unique motorsport discipline is still alive in Hungary and the federation revealed their event plan for 2020.
For this year, Hungary got 2 FIM Europe event: on 11th of April, Debrecen can organize the FIM Speedway European Championship 1st qualification round while in the middle of September, Nagyhalász will host the FIM Under 21 Speedway European Championship Final.
The Hungarian national championship will have 2 rounds: the opening one at Nagyhalász on the 1st of May while the final round will be in Debrecen, - as a season-closing event – on 23rd of October.
Besides these 4 events, the race organizers decided to host open/invitational meetings as well as take part in an international championship. Nagyhalász will hold one of the rounds of MACEC Cup while Debrecen will have 3 invitational meetings. One of them will be an international pair meeting, another one will be the Pentecostal Trophy and of course, the city will host the most traditional Hungarian speedway event, the 45th Grand Prix of Debrecen.
